A Relaxed Sunday at BFF Winery (Balestrieri Family Farms)
We popped over to BFF — Balestrieri Family Farms — on a sunny Sunday, an easy and pleasant 20-min drive from Walnut Creek that made this a perfect and easy escape. The property is relaxed and welcoming: outdoor seating with vineyard views, friendly staff, and plenty of shade for a laid-back afternoon tasting.
The Setting
The atmosphere at the wine tasting room was warm, open, and relaxed — the kind of place that invites you to linger. It felt less like a formal tasting room and more like an afternoon picnic with friends. Plenty of outdoor space, easy conversation, sunshine, and no pressure to rush through pours. For a laid-back weekend reset, it checked all the boxes. We sampled five wines: Viognier, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinot Noir, and a Red Blend. The whites were bright and approachable, the rosé lively, and the reds smooth and drinkable — all reflecting a friendly, small-farm sensibility rather than heavy-handed winemaking.
The Wines We Tasted
Wines we tasted at Balesterieri Family Farms winery - whites, rose, and reds
For $25 per person, we were offered up to 4 different wines to taste. We worked through a flight of 6-7 wines that included:
Viognier
Pinot Grigio
White Blend - Estate grown blend of Pinot Grigio and Viognier
Rosé
Pinot Noir
Cabernet Sauvignon
Red Blend
There was something approachable about the lineup — wines that felt accessible and easy to drink rather than overly complex or structured.
Highlights
- Viognier: My favorite. Crisp, clean, and refreshing with bright stone-fruit and floral notes. Good acidity and salinity makes this an ideal wine to be paired with raw oysters or light seafood.
- Pinot Grigio: Clean white with a pink grapefruit finish, aromas of lemons and hint of vanilla
- BFF White: Pleasant and balanced, a good summer-sip when you want something round but not heavy.
- Rosé: Fresh and fruity with expressions of strawberries, guava and tropical notes, rounded mouthfeel, perfect for the afternoon sun and outdoor picnic.
The Reds
- Pinot Noir: Soft tannins with ripe berry character; approachable and easygoing. Not quite the classic fruity Pinot with forest floor notes but is drinkable for the most part.
- Cabernet Sauvignon: A little strong on the oak but definitely getting notes of dark cherry and vanilla. A very good value for this bottle.
- Red Blend: Solid and balanced, a friendly finishing pour.
A shame that there were no wine glasses to savor fully the flavors of these wines
That said, one real downside: tastings were served in plastic cups. While the setting and pours were generous, plastic made it hard to appreciate the wines’ aromatics and subtle nuances. For anyone who enjoys savoring bouquet and texture, proper glassware would have made a noticeable difference.
For a winery with such a charming outdoor atmosphere, having proper stemware would certainly elevate the experience considerably in my humble opinion and allow the wines to truly shine. I would certainly bring my wine glass next time.
Final Thoughts
Overall, BFF Winery offers a convenient, easygoing escape close to our home — perfect for a casual Sunday outing with friends. The ambiance encourages you to slow down, enjoy the moment, and sip without pretense.
With just a few refinements to the tasting setup, the experience could move from pleasant to memorable.
Would I go back? Yes — especially for another glass of that Viognier or Rose, some charcuterie, and friends along to enjoy it with.
